DC Comics jumping into NFTs with Free NFT giveaway for DCFanDome

Matthew Fleischman

Comic Book Titan DC Comics is giving away free NFTs to people who register for its October 16th FanDome Event.

DC Comics is becoming the next major entertainment company to join the NFT community.  In an announcement from late September, DC Comics plans to give every person who signs up for their October 16th FanDome event an NFT. This thank you to fans is part of a brand new partnership with Palm NFT Studios. Palm NFT Studios will be producing the first batch of NFTs.

DC Comics NFTs

DC Comics is pulling out all the stops for this NFT giveaway connected to this year’s DC FanDome event.  Therefore, everyone who registers for the event will receive one free randomly selected NFT.  Additionally, they will be eligible for a second free NFT if they post about their first one on their social media.

Some of the characters from the DC roster selected for this giveaway include Batman, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Green Lantern, and also Superman. There are also many other iconic characters DC has ready as well.

Fans will be able to collect three covers of each character, each at a different rarity during this NFT Drop.  Similar to other NFT collections, the NFTs come in three levels of rarity; common, rare, and legendary.

For example, the Wonder Woman fans can collect a Common (1987’s Wonder Woman #1 by George Peréz), Rare (2021’s Nubia and the Amazons #1 by Alitha Martinez), and/or Legendary (Yara Flor on 2021’s Future State: Wonder Woman #1 by Jenny Frison) cover.

DC Comics publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee is curating the NFT collection.

“We spent a lot of time figuring out how to adapt and translate these vintage covers for a 21st-century format like NFTs. This drop honors our 87-year heritage while imagining a future in which NFTs are at the heart of new ways to engage with DC content and unlock new experiences.”

DC NFTs made by Palm NFT Studio

The Studio behind the production of DC Comics NFTs is Palm NFT Studio.  The comic book company chose to partner with Palm NFT Studio due to its “environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient” technology.  Their method of minting is 99% more energy efficient than other proof of work systems.  Subsequently, their methods allow them to mint allow Palm NFT Studio to mint ‘millions of NFTs for fans’ at nearly no additional cost.

“It’s immensely rewarding to work with a partner like DC who understands that blockchain is more than a technology, it’s a sustainable storytelling tool that can reshape the relationship between creators and fans… What does it mean to be a fan? What does it mean to be a collector? These are age-old questions that we get to watch creators like DC answer in brand new ways every day.”

Palm Co-Founder Dan Heyman

Palm NFT Studios runs on a private permissioned blockchain that is a sidechain of the Ethereum network.  Consequently this allows for Palm’s transactions to be instantaneous and keep transaction costs low.

NFTs and DC FanDome

As of yet, there are no exact numbers of how many NFTs DC and Palm intend to produce. The FanDome event is free to register for and takes place online.  As such, there is no limit to the number of people who can attend the event.  22 million people across 220 countries took part in the 2020 event, and DC is expecting an even higher turnout this year. With every attendee set to receive at least one NFT, it seems that DC will be giving more than 22 million this year.

DC’s venture into the NFT-verse comes on the heels of Marvel’s partnership with Mobile digital collectible platform VeVe.  Marvel and Veve released a number of NFT series within the past few months, including Spider-man and Captain America.

Moreover, this announcement also comes days after MGM’s launch of its own 007 Collections that coincided with the new movie.  In the same vein, DC parent company Warner Brother also launched an NFT collection just ahead of Dune’s recent release as well.
